CAWNY's Breakfast and Lunch Program

Does CAWNY receive any Federal or State government funds to help fund the Breakfast and Lunch Program?
CAWNY does not receive government funds for its Breakfast and Lunch Program.
How can I determine which Payment Option is right for my family?
If your child eats breakfast or lunch at school every school day, the Monthly Plan is probably best for you.  (Remember, payment plans coincide with your monthly tuition plan.)
If your child eats breakfast or lunch at school occasionally, then setting up a Credit Account is probably your best option.
If your High Schooler rarely eats lunch at school, then the Cash-Only option would probably suit your family best.  (CAWNY will automatically open a Credit Account for any Elementary or Middle School student who did not bring a lunch.)  Any student may pay cash for breakfast at any time.
Are the same options offered every day?
The “Bagged Lunch Meals” are offered every day.  The Hot Meals vary each day of the week.
Will there be healthier options offered each day?
We know our parents will provide the main meal of the day (dinner) at home.  Therefore, we are comfortable offering the options for breakfast or lunch that you or your child would have in a diner or café setting or even at home.
We have learned from experience that school children, in general, do not eat vegetables at school.  95% of them end up in the trash.  Therefore, we will not be offering vegetable options.  However, we will try to provide fresh fruit as an option for a lunch side and breakfast choice as often as we possibly can.  We will try to avoid whole apples in general as we have witnessed that these simply get thrown in the garbage by the vast majority of students.  We will concentrate more on mandarin oranges, grapes and berries, when in season.
Students can also make healthier choices.  For example, a bag of Goldfish Crackers has less calories and half the fat of Doritos or Lay’s chips.
Milk - Because pints of milk must be ordered in cases of 50 and expire within seven (7) to ten (10) days of delivery, it is the only drink option that is difficult to maintain.  When offered in September and October of 2021, it was very rarely requested.  So rarely that we were literally pouring gallons of milk down the drain about once a week.  Therefore, we removed it from our menu.
Can a parent of an Elementary student be involved in their child’s breakfast and lunch choices?
Yes!  Parents of Elementary students can request a Parent Menu.  A parent’s choices can be permanent, or they can receive a menu weekly.
What if we want to pay monthly for lunches, but cash-only for breakfast?  Can we do that?
Absolutely!  Any student can use cash to purchase breakfast (or order lunch) any morning.  They will simply go to the cafeteria and purchase a breakfast ticket before being served.
What if we do not choose the Monthly Plan or set up a Credit Account for our child(ren) and our child arrives at school without a lunch?
CAWNY will automatically open a Credit Account for any Elementary or Middle School student who did not bring a lunch.
We will also automatically open a Credit Account for a High Schooler who would like to purchase a lunch on credit.  If you would prefer your High Schooler NOT order lunches without cash to pay for them, please speak to them about this before school begins.
